So who comes for a massage: the taxi driver, joiner, engineer, office worker, author, chefs, care workers, teenagers, students, beauticians, parents and grandparents, the older person, pregnant women, business men, marathon runners, musicians, the arts and crafts ladies, teachers and tourists…. Many of the occupational hazards of adult life will be greatly alleviated by massage; youngsters with growing pains, the less mobile, disabled and those needing support with illness.

Massage in the West has for many years only been associated with sport but over the last couple of decades it has spread as people are increasingly experiencing the benefits. Massage can provide us with a means to counteract tension, stiffness, aches, pains, inflammation, restricted movement and postural issues as in Remedial Massage.

Paula is a qualified Advanced Remedial Massage (DARM)Therapist. An Advanced Remedial therapist has studied anatomy and physiology in more detail, learnt further examination procedures and specific techniques for each particular joint allowing the therapist to treat a wider range of conditions and injuries. They are able to help re-alignment of the spine and body and their skills, knowledge and experience means that treatments are more precise and effective. To-date some of the situations Paula has assisted with are: falls, sprains and injuries, surgical rehabilitation, joint problems, including jaw and ribs, many conditions such as arthritis, Parkinson’s, migraines, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff, repetitive strain injury etc and supporting postural compensations occupational and sport event massage.

Relaxing massage commonly known as Swedish, Aromatherapy or Holistic massage gives the opportunity to empty the mind, be in the moment, letting tired muscles loosen and enjoying a sense of calm and time to just be…. Indian Head Massage, now westernized, is deeply relaxing. The therapist uses slow rhythmic massage techniques to reduce tension and create a stress relieving experience. Hot Stone Massage uses Basalt stone formed millions of years ago during volcanic eruptions, the stone contains magnetic or titanic iron which retains heat, the stones appear grey or greenish when dry and turn black when wet. The stones are heated and used to massage the client; lovely for cold winter days or for people who find heat therapeutic.

Sports massage can be pre or post event, as part of an ongoing fitness plan or as and when required. It benefits both the enthusiast as well as the professional.

Massage By Paula

For too many of us, stiffness and pain is a way of life to which people have become use to, and it is often not until you receive a massage that you realise that our muscles are tight and how much of our energy is consumed by tension. On receiving a massage our soft tissues are rejuvenated, toxins flushed out, circulation and lymphatic flow are improved, breathing often softens and you become relaxed. Muscles lengthen, joints become more mobile and greater flexibility is experienced along with greater mental clarity and balance. Massage is invaluable for our optimum performance and wellbeing whatever the stage in life; try massage first.

The History of Massage

For thousands of years some form of massage or laying on of hands has been used to heal and soothe the sick. To the ancient Greek and Roman physicians, massage was one of the principal means of healing and relieving pain. Most of us remember our mothers rubbing or knees after a childhood fall. In the early fifth century BC, Hippocrates, respected as ‘the father of medicine,’ wrote: “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing. For rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid.”

Pliny, a Roman naturalist, was regularly rubbed to relieve his asthma and Julius Caesar who suffered from epilepsy, was daily pinched all over, to ease his neuralgia and headaches. More recently it was at the beginning of the 19th Century that a Swede by the name of Per Henrik Ling developed what is now known as Swedish massage, synthesizing his system from knowledge of gymnastics and physiology and from Chinese, Egyptian, Greek and Roman techniques. In 1813 the first college offering massage as part of the curriculum was established in Stockholm and from then on institutes and spas that included massage sprang up all over the continent.
